Literary Essay Topics For Animal Farm
Literary Essay Topics For Animal FarmMany of the literary essays in my classes on Animal Farm, therefore, talk about the social aspects of animals in society. Animal Farm is a very rich text, and as a writer I see how the author uses this to construct his themes. There are two ways to look at this text. One way is to view it as the life story of the animals themselves. And the other way is to see it as a historical document that is intended to make its readers think. The message of Animal Farm is not a message to one person; rather, it is a message to all of humanity. As a teacher, I want students to think about and draw parallels between our lives and theirs. And in this case, I try to compare the human condition with the social conditions of animals. In Animal Farm, the farm management is set up to produce a surplus of food. But the results of that are bad for all of us: we lose time in the production process and waste food, and we kill animals. In fact, the general rule in Animal Far m is that it is better to let them starve rather than kill them, but that does not mean that you are a good or bad person for doing so.The tension between the farm owner, the director, and the animals, then, is not really between these three groups; rather, it is between the individual and the society. It is a conflict between individuality and the common good. For the farmer, each animal is an individual, but for the community, they are all part of a group. In my Animal Farm class, we read passages from the book and discuss how the author is using animal stories to make a specific point. For example, in the first scene of the book, we find that Peter is bringing a beautiful, new steer to the farm.At first, the animals are afraid, but as Peter and his father feed them, they begin to realize that this 'new' animal will be theirs. We can think of the animals as individuals who wish to survive, while the group stands in for the natural order: the herd. We might also think of the animals as individuals who were deceived by humans, and who now need to be punished for that deception. In this sense, Animal Farm is a drama in which humans help animals or hurt them, by their actions. The social messages, the book sends out are important for teachers to remember as they prepare their literature courses. Consider using Animal Farm as your literary essay topic for next year.
